  1. Many BYPC users, has a spare PC or two, that has enough RAM and CPU power, with addition large HD, and easily meet the need of home network server.

I would like to set one up, but I would like to find out how to setup these options :

    1. Wake up at 2:00PM, and goto hibernation at 12:00PM, everyday.

    2. Wake up asap after there is wired network activity, then go to hibernation when there isno activity after 1 hour.

Thank you in advance for all ideas and help.

not sure if I completely understand your post....
for #2, there should be a BIOS option for "Wake on LAN" though.

Is there a freeware or shareware program like this ?

I use 'Wake on LAN' with my two video servers, but I activate it manually, usually from my laptop or HTPC in the front room. Your BIOS in the server should have some timer settings, but sometimes they aren't very convenient to set and use. There may also be a 'Wake on PIC' or USB or other PME events in your BIOS settings..

There are some pay 'Wake on LAN' programs that can run off a timer. But you would need to have another computer running to issue the commands. And WOL has been problematic for me at times. It doesn't always work properly through my router.

I'm thinking of a simpler system. I'm looking to parallel my server power buttons with a small DC relay and use either a wired cable or maybe a X-10 radio control module to do the switching through the house power lines. You can also get timer modules for X-10s. I often turn the servers off and on by using the front momentary power button, so it should be easy enough to control it the same way remotely.

To monitor the servers, I use TightVNC and I can operate the servers from any computer on the LAN, move files, reset the computer.etc.. TightVNC can switch them off also, but not start them. TightVNC can also use Ctrl-alt delete to force a restart. I already have the LAN cable strung, so adding a four conductor phone cable to the MB power switch terminals and two pushbuttons in the front room would be easy enough, though the relay would probably be more reliable..
