In that particular thread i ask for dvd ripping alone. this time i implore suggestion for perhaps universal converter. i used Any Video Converter but the quality is often significantly decreased. morover, it takes too long a time, unlike vcdgear. i just need a recommendation of a freeware that u think is the best.... for a freeware.

Such a tool does not exist. There are specific tools that do very good conversions from one format to another - e.g. AutoGK for DVD to avi, or FAVC for avi/mkv/mpeg to DVD. But there is no universal encoder that does everything and does it well. Every converter that tries to be all things to all men produces mediocre output most of the time. As with most things in video, each job requires a specific tool to get the best results. If you want an easy life with quick conversions to and from anything, that's fine. But you cannot have high quality results as well.

That said, one man's mediocrity is another man's quality (otherwise no-one would use WinAVI), so you may find the output from some of these acceptable to you
