I Liked the guy. May he rest in peace.![]()
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia's northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.
Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said Irwin, 44, whose television show "The Crocodile Hunter" won international acclaim and popularized the phrase "Crikey," was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.
Sky Television also reported that Irwin had been stung by a sting ray.
Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.
Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.

I just saw this. I loved his show and have been watching it since it first came on here. He will be missed.
His name was MackemX
What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
R.I.P.
I saw this over an hour ago but none of the major news wires had picked it up yet, so I thought it was bogus. Poor guy. I feel bad for his family. -
Good riddance. This guy tormented wildlife - supposedly in the name of "conservation". Dickhead extraordinaire.
-
My first reaction was "Again?". There have been previous erroneous reports of his death, but if it's true then may he Rest In Peace.

LONDON Conservationists mourned the death of Australia's flamboyant "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin on Monday, and one suggested that TV's demands for sensation had pushed him to be too daring.
"He clearly took a lot of risks and television encouraged him to do that," said Ray Mears, a Briton whose television programs have included "Extreme Survival."
"It's a shame that television audiences need that to be attracted to wildlife," Mears said. "Dangerous animals, you leave them alone because they will defend themselves. Nature defends itself, it isn't all about hugging animals and going 'ahh.'"
The ebullient Irwin, 44, died after being stung by a stingray barb in a diving accident about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) north off Port Douglas on the Great Barrier Reef.
"What he did was so extreme that it isn't surprising that he died. Just the same, it is very sad," said Kees Oscar Ekeli, a marine biologist and director of the Bergen Aquarium in Norway.
Although Irwin "went further than was sensible," Ekeli credited the Australian for doing "a fantastic job of spreading information about biology ... and nature's dangerous species."
"In the modern world's noisy media picture, he used extreme methods to break through, and that is exactly what he did," Ekeli added.
British naturalist David Bellamy said he cried when heard of Irwin's death.
"The thing with Steve was he mixed damn good science with show business and I don't know anyone else who did that," Bellamy said.
British zoologist Mark O'Shea, who has also worked on television, said Irwin had made a massive contribution to conservation in Australia.
"It is going to leave an immense hole," said O'Shea, who credited Irwin with inspiring a new generation of conservationists.
"A lot of people who now want to study biology and work with animals may not have considered it before they watched him on television," O'Shea said. -

The hunter became the hunted, I agree it was a matter of time.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0 -
He jumps on turtles & terrorizes lizards & snakes & crocodiles. The cameraman admitted on radio that they had "boxed in" the stingray & that the stingray reacted in a natural defensive way.
Irwin was busted in Antarctic waters "surfing" on blue whales.
Gee I wonder what happened to the stingray? Harpooned to smithereens no doubt.
I, too (as are my acquainances), am shocked at how so-called "conservationists" in the media are praising this egghead. -
Anyone find the video they took of his death yet?
Was he in your dead pool? Not mine. -
There'a a charity concert at the zoo for him - I hear "Sting" is headlining.

Seriously, this guy was a cretin. He acted like a semi-retard. He abused animals & showed no respect for wildlife at all. He was a showman, an exploiter of Nature, masquerading in the guise of "conservationism".
This morning = more than a dozen pages in the daily newspaper devoted to him. Editorials, letters of tribute, glowing praise. The world may be disintegrating, but that's not important.

Alright. I get it. Everybody on this planet WORSHIPS this ******* legend.

Look, you eggs, if THIS legend died ---

---- I'd very much miss her & her "Chimpanzee Diaries".
THAT is what I call respectfulness towards Nature. [They are truly "living it" in the wild].
She doesn't throttle chimps and push their squealing faces up to the camera so all the "kids out there" can all see the "screaming wild monkey". Oh how cute Mommy. -
And if someone repeatedly trashed her in a thread about her death you'd probably get annoyed too.

What's wrong with spanking a monkey every now and then???

Animal Planet will rename the garden space in front of Discovery's world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, to the "Steve Irwin Memorial Sensory Garden." They are also looking at the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which they will call "The Crikey Fund" which will "allow people from across the globe to make contributions in Irwin's honor to support wildlife protection, education and conservation."

His last thought: "CRIKEY! I'M FUCKED!"
Anybody got any Steve Irwin jokes to share?
(Hey Adam, consider me a necessary balance in this equation. The mainstream media here is overboard with the Steve Irwin fiasco. I'm trying to balance things out. Tomorrow is "Crikey it's Khaki Friday" day - for fuckssakes. We are meant to wear khaki to commemmorate this dick. Have we forgotten, alas, his irresponsible dangling of baby in front of crocodile jaws? Or, his ILLEGAL "surfing" of humpback whales in Antarctic seas? Wow, don't we have such short memories. He was the "Crocodile Hunter", fer crying out loud. What has HUNTING got to do with CONSERVATION? However much I detest Germaine Greer, I am forced to totally agree with her recent comments. ENOUGH'S ENOUGH, EVERYBODY! STEVE IRWIN WAS A DICKBRAIN!!!!! GROW UP!!!!!!!!!) -
While having my evening coffee I stumbled on this:
Hunting:
1. The activity or sport of pursuing game.
2. The act of conducting a search for something: house hunting.

Why did he have to die on my birthday! T_T now I'm gonna remember this everytime it's my birthday and I'll see bad luck! T_T

Conquest10, yes I am stirring things up, I am living amidst INSANITY.
Steve Irwin was a dickbrain retard who exploited animals & masqueraded as a "conservationist".
EVERYWHERE around me, people LOVE HIM. Tomorrow, will be very interesting on public transport on the way to work, to see who is wearing khaki.
This has got overboard. The press. The media. Gushing world leaders. People crying on radio. 20-plus pages devoted in newspapers. Gushing editorials. Polls.
I stand by my words.
MODS, feel free to lock this thread. I'm finished with stupid people.
