in the pecking order of media encoders?

    Good,excellent,average or other?

I want the best quality MPEG-2 file possible when encoding within a reasonable cost.

What do you use and why?

Anybody use Premiere and also other options out there?

    Curious what users think!

    Thanks for your feedback.

Adobe Premiere Pro 2 is DV format centric and one can assume the Premiere version of the Mainconcept Encoder is optimized for DV to 480i DVD.

Some say Sony Pictures has tweaked Vegas' version of the same Mainconcept OEM MPeg SDK for better results.

Ulead also uses Mainconcept as do many others http://www.mainconcept.com/site/company-3/partners-111.html

Avid, Pinnacle and Canopus have licensed different technology. Procoder has a following. Cinemacraft has a strong following especially for progressive DVD encoding . The full versions cost >$2k They have an entry version that is usable.

TMPGEnc is also popular but runs slower than the others.

I've been happy with the Vegas implementation of the Mainconcept encoder and also use the Adobe and ULead versions. I haven't compared encoders one to one since 2004. I'm sure others will have input and opinions.

The MainConcept engine used by Adobe looks excellent. One of the best.
