I'd like to know too, I've had no luck doing TV->VirtualDub->TMPGEnc->XVCD. I don't understand
Interlacing is still a problem. -
Why to de-intelace? for VCD or xSVCD?
If so, then for a standard VCD, most of the people here say even fild/adaption (for DV source).
For xSVCD ( D4, 352 X 288pal-240ntsc) I vote for simply de-interlace odd field, but setting the output to intelace. If you want progressive output, don't mess with xSVCD, go VCD
For CVD/SVCD/DVD, you don't need to de-interlace your source, just to find the right field order. For DV, most of the times is bottom field first (field B) -
My player doesn't play SVCD, only XVCD. My DVD copies are fine 720x480 xvcds, look awsome. Kinda disapointing I can't get something decent from my capture card, oh well. I've seen 720x480 tv captures before that had no interlacing artifacts.

I don't use any of the TMPGenc deinterlace filters because they all (other than "double" throw away too much data, and the "double" causes too much blur.
Use the Deinterlacer (Area Based) for Virtual Dub written by Gunnar Thalin. (link: http://home.bip.net/gunnart/video/DeinterlaceAreaBased.zip).
This deinterlaces only where the jaggies are and does not throw out other detail. Good filter, and works pretty well. Use it in virtual dub and then frameserve the output to TMPGenc.
Goodluck.
