what are the key things to look for when buying an internal dvd writer. can any one recommend me a good one.
also how do i know what set up i have in my computer, What type of connection does my PC have? how do i know if i have sata or any other connection types i may need.

Any of the name brand (and most generic) drives will work just fine for the casual user. If you want a recommendation, I am very happy with my new Pioneer 112D.
As for what's inside your computer, even most new computers still ship with IDE drives, and your computer sounds older. The easiest way, especially for an inexperienced person, would be to just replace your existing CDrom drive with the new DVD burner. It is a pretty straight forward and simple matter.Google is your Friend
