  1. Hey -

Alright, please note: I am an absolute newbie here. I have spent a couple hours now poking around this site, so if I've blatantly missed the answer to my question, please, be gentle...

Okay - What I want to do is copy a couple of clips from some movies for a film project. (No, I'm not trying to pirate anything... this is an innocent project. I guess you'll just have to trust me on that). However, naturally, I'm running into the copyright protection, and have been unable to copy those clips. I tried copying directly to my camcorder, or through my DVRaptor (I downloaded a kit that allows it to capture analog - available on it's site). And, obviously, I tried copying from the main tape, to another VCR and a blank tape. None of it has worked.

So, how can I get around the copyright protection? Once again, I'm blatantly new at this.

    Thanks.

  2. If you are using the ATI type card you may be able to overcome this problem with MMC 7.X reg, search this site for this utility, if not the only way is to buy a SIMA Box of something like that.

  3. Actually, using excerpts of copyrighted materials is protect by Fair Use. It's when you take the entire copyrighted work that you run into problems.

To get clips off a video tape, go to Best Buy or Circuit City and look in the video accessories for Sima SED-CM Copymaster. It's around fifty bucks.

It'll improve the quality of your clips, and also remove the copy protection signal.

Just out of curiosity, I have the ATI and was wondering about the copy protection thing on that card--does the software version of the "remover" improve quality similar to the hardware version?

  5. A Sima copymaster? Is this like a box that I would put in between two vcrs (or between the vcr and my camecorder, which can copy from tape), or is this something that would only work in conjunction with a card, like ATI?

    Thanks for the help.
