Pioneer XV-DV313 will only play back up copies of dvd's, not originals?

I have a Pioneer XV-DV313 which has been fine for ages. It is multi region but for some unknown reason it will now only play back up copies of dvd's and not original discs! I could understand it if it was the other way round but this has me really baffled. It does occasionally play original but it it is getting rarer.

Any help would be great.

Had a player acting just like that. Pretty soon, it stopped playing DVD (any kind) at all, just CD/CD-R. Then it went into the bin. In other words - it died.

My Thomson(which is used to death) is displaying similar characteristics...I am looking for a replacement.
