  1. Is it possible to put DVD-video data (VIDEO_TS, VOBs) on HD DVD (Blu-Ray) so it can be played on HD players ? Reason - I make DVDs from mpeg2 movies from DVB-S (without reencoding of course). I would like to have on one disc more movies than 2-3 .

What is the mpeg2 details? Resolution, framerate? You maybe could make a hddvd or bluray because they support several mpeg2 formats like dvd, www.videohelp.com/hd#tech

Not without conversion. HD-DVD and BluRay both require standard definition video to have higher frame rates (50 fps for 720x576 video and 59.94 fps for 720x480 video) than DVD does and you'd have to burn in either HD-DVD or BluRay format. No, you can't make a giant DVD format disc out of a BluRay or HD-DVD disc. This is like asking if you can burn a giant VCD on a DVD disc. The answer is no.

  4. I still think there's a chance. I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory to make DVDs from DVB-S recordings. Many of those recordings don't have standard 720x576 resolution. There go 2 options in Movie Factory - 'Do not convert compliant files' and 'Support X-Disc' which cheats the DVD format, so another resolutions, such as 544x756 and others can be burned on DVD without reencoding. Thus made DVD is playable on most players. Though I still had no HDDVD or BR burner/player, I did the same attempt on PC's hard disc with Ulead Movie Factory 6. I made HDDVD files from mpeg2 movie without reencoding. The result was playable (Power DVD 7 Ultra), but there was one problem - no sound. I think that's because mpeg2 file has sound in mpeg format, but LPCM is needed. It's not so bad, Converting sound is easier and faster than converting video. Maybe someone even persuade Ulead to make audio conversion possible without video reencoding. And let's hope, that standalone players will be able to play such HD-DVD.

P.S. Strange - HD DVD supports mpeg audio too (BluRay not), so there must be some my mistake with that audio. I'll do some more attempts.
