  1. Most players today can play either DVD-R or DVD+R. Have any of you found if todays players seem to be more compatible with one or the other or the same for both. When I first started I found the DVD+R to be the most compatible but now it seems the DVD-R's play better and in more players. Anyone else notice this on their systems?

Actually, DVD - was more compatible in past days. Now, probably about equal if you are using newer set top players. DVD + may have a slight advantage with bitsetting. More important by far is the quality of either formats of discs. Members usually recommend Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim for the highest quality DVD media. Others may work -- most times, with most burners and players. But why take a chance.

I find that +R media with booktype set to dvd-rom provides the broadest compatibility across dvd players.
Select brand name media (actual manufacturer) that works best with your particular burner. I find that my Benq 1650 and 1655 burners do a great job on most any decent quality media. I mostly use TDK DVD+R media purchased from Costco (CMC) with excellent results in these burners on my system. Ritek works just fine in my system also. But, as someone else mentioned, you usually can't go wrong with Verbatim or TY media either. I do not burn at the outer limits of my burner or media rated speeds. Pick something reasonable in the middle.

I don't think most modern players show a bias toward -R or +R. Most sold are inexpensive implementations of chipmaker's reference designs which have no bias toward either media.

I repeat my frequent comments, that with an appropriate burner (mine are LG) it is possible to succesfully burn any single layer media which does not have obvious physical flaws. I have identical success rates with Verbatim (MCC), CMC and even so-called fake MCC. With DL media my success is limited to Verbatim.

I burn at the full rated speed of the media. And Verbatim at 18x.

  6. I have a sony and and LG burner. I seem to have more success with the -R than I do with the +R of the same brand.

  7. I have a Toshiba DVD recorder and a Panasonic DVD recorder that won't play + discs. I've never found anything that won't play - discs.

I have a panasonic dvd recorder that also won't play +R's, unless i set the booktype to DVD-ROM...
and i have come across standalone players and mobile players that would not play - or +, unless i set the booktype to DVD-ROM, that's why i have almost exclusively used good quality +R's set to DVD-ROM.
