mpg to avi with AutoGK

I have a couple Bin files with acompanying Sfv and Cue files.
I used Daemon tools to open the file and copy them to my desk top.
I thought I was dealing with mpeg 2 (Svcd /DVD files) and tried to convert them to
AVI with AutoGK using the turorial

The processing was very brief and I got an error message something like
"Source file is not correct type , error code 2" I have not been able to track down what error
code 2 is. But I can guess that I am actually dealing with mpgeg 1 files and its a simple VCD file ?
How can I proceed converting this to an AVI ? What tool can I use to ascertain what is in this container ?

AutoGK supports MPEG-1, so I doubt that's the problem.

Ok I'm trying again with Vdub, (I ran G-spot).
I did one copy of the file but thought I could improve on quality loss and
had not cropped the edges.
I am now getting a message "canot innitialize video compression due to codec error" "the source image file is not acceptable".
So I have downloaded an updated version of DIVX v6.6, and it doesn't look anything like the example in the tutorial. Nor does it seem to offer coder versions 4 or 5 which I assumed was due to the date the tutorial was created?
I allso "attempted" to install the lame audio codecs and they fail to show up in the codec sellection area as well.

Anyone have sugestions ?

The Divx codec requires the frame size be a multiple of, I forget, either 2 or 4. 8 or 16 will be even better. You probably cropped and left a frame size that wasn't one of those.

Some of Divx's Certification Profiles limit the frame size. If you feed Divx a frame size larger than that it will give that error message. Use a different profile.

You need the ACM version of Lame for VirtualDub.

You might try using Xvid instead. It's a little easier to sort out. I use VirtualDub Mod and convert my SVCDs to Xvids. I change the audio to MP3 with the LAME 3.97 Release ACM codec. (44100kHz, 128kbps CBR Stereo 16KB/s) I set the video bitrate at about 1000Kbps so I come out with a file about 800 - 900MB. It's for my HTPC, so I don't need CD sizes. Since there are two files with a SVCD, I encode both, then put them back into VDM and combine with 'Direct stream copy'. Also, if I'm not using any filters or cropping, I use 'Fast recompress' mode for encoding instead of 'Full processing'.

I couldn't get AutoGK to do exactly what I wanted. It seems more set up for DVD conversions. With VDM, you can also save your processing settings so when you find the proper combination, you can repeat it.

EDIT: I like VDM because I can open the MPEG file on the SVCD directly in VDM, so I don't have to rip them to the hard drive first before putting them in VDM.
