    Hi,
I'm trying to do something for a friend. She has a corner table with a display and she wants to display a single pic on it for days at a time. She's doing room themes, etc.
She only has this flat tv and a dvd player so I can't use a thumb drive so my only method of delivering this pic to the tv is via a DVD.

So is it possible to create a DVD that contains only a jpg or gif and have it show it for a long time. I understand the dvd is only so long so I'll have to figure out how to replay it over and over.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated

    Regards

i suppose you could use a dvd and put it into pause mode but i'd be worried about screen burn.

You dont have to put the player into pause mode. Just burn the picture on a CD or DVD, but I too would be worried about screen burn, especially if its a plasma screen.

The problems associated with such projects are .

    A: Screen burn in .
    B: Player overheating .
    C: Disc failure .

Then throw on top getting a/r correct for the chosen picture to display correctly .

Picture a/r vs output screen a/r

These devices are not designed for such "extended" playback treatment .

However , should they persist , you should

Make title no longer than 5 minutes in length
Add 1 second of black at end (refresh)
Author , nav commands set in loop state .

Figuring what wears out first ... priceless

Or get her one of those new wizz bang electronic photo album type frames ... some work as tv screens and playback video from multimedia cards .

    Thanks guys,
I see your points. Well I'll pass it on.
But just in case we decide to experiment, I'm wondering what tool you recommend. I have nero and I don't see an option to create a video cd. I do have access to other authoring tools, like sonic, adobe and ulead, some might be demo versions tho.

    Cheers

Plasma screens are widely used for signage. The trick they use is slow circular update of the image to prevent monitor burn-in. Signage monitors store several frames that are cycled.

You could probably fake this with a slow slideshow with slightly displaced and/or rotated frames. Some newer consumer plasma/LCD TV sets have built in slideshow capability from a USB jumpdrive.

I think your friend might be more interested in those digital picture frames. They can be had for a 100.00 or so depending on frame size and capabilities.

Those are meant for displaying digital pictures. They can even do slideshows and are also able to use simple memory cards. You might want to suggest this. They sell them at Bestbuy, circuit city and probably even at drug stores now.

and they won't have burn in issues since this is what they are intended for - now I ASSUME you can leave them on one picture for a fixed duration. However as I have never owned one you would have to check out the manuals for the particular model you are considering.

Thanks guys. I have mentioned the picture frames, and she may go with them, but now this has become kind of a quest for me

I'll try the easyphoto program and see if I can figure it out.

    cheers

  11. Try this, Take a picture with a digital camera. Play it back on the camera (which is on a power adapter ) thru the TV, and switch off the camera EVP and LCD.

TV screen burn is okay as long this brings in bussiness to cover the cost.

If you need a single picture, here's a way to put it to any authored (or backed-up) DVD and thus make use of whole DVDR capacity. Make a 24-bit 720x480 BMP and encode in Muxman. Then you'll need a DVD editor like DVDRemake. Import the DVD and encoded picture as separate projects. Find FBI warning and replace it with your picture using 'replace block' command. Right-click on new picture cell => 'edit block attributes' and set 'still time' to 'infinity'. Then right-click on picture, 'add button' and give it a command 'LinkTailPGC' (if the replaced block is a separate title; otherwise you'll need something like LinkNextCell or LinkNextProgram from edit dialog). Right-click once more and call 'edit button set attributes' command, set auto select button '1'. Right-click on the DVD and set 'enable all operations'. The new button will not show highlighting since it doesn't have subpicture. After disc insertion you'll watch your picture and if get tired you push enter on remote and watch your DVD. Have fun!

Hey I just thought of another option - what about the old picture jacket deal?????

Couldn't you author a disc with like a second blank video and then author the picture as the jacket picture? If I remember how they work don't you have to stop the dvd while its playing and then the jacket picture appears?

Of course you're limited to dvd res at 720x480 but that would be an option. I think you can fit three jacket pictures in the specs right???

Create 'empty' DVD-Video with menu(s) where the picture(s) is its background. I did it once long time ago for my first LCD tv but as some people already warned you - my player lasted only thru one weekend
AFAIR there was a problem to create the menu without actual videos, but it was long time ago, when dvd players played mostly DVD-Videos only hehe.
Nowadays (simplest way IMHO) I would have just slapped the picture on a cd-rw or dvd-rw and stick it in any of my players, they all play various formats and pictures too (and so does yours probably too). If there is only 1 picture, the player will display it until it dies or disc dies from heat...

If you just want a "still display" for short time (ie during party like i did - edit: wrong example, that party stretched almost 3 days LOL) or something like that not requiring playback 24/7, and youre low on $$ resources, then just buy any el-cheapo $20 player just for this purpose, burn your picture on a disc, hook it up, stick it in, and youre set Don't worry about your tv if its LCD, and if its plasma you won't get burn-in effect until months anyways. And el-cheapo may last long time too
