I have a toshiba satellite a70 notebook computer with a UJ820S internal DVD multidrive and a MK4025GAS internal hard drive. When my internal multidrive no longer wrote to DVD's I decided to buy an external DVD writer as my internal one would still function as a reader. The new writer I bought was a sony DVD RW DRU-820A. This worked fine with DVD decrypter when ripping DVD's to my internal hard drive but as it is only a 40gb hard drive I decided to buy an external one for storing large files like DVD back ups. The external hard drive I have is a 500gb Iomega ST350083 0A connected via USB.

My problem is when I use DVD Decrypter to rip discs using my external DVD drive and external hard drive it works fine at first but between 2 and 14 % of the total progress the read rate drops to 0.0X and I can hear the disc stop spinning. Then everything freezes up and I have to use the task manager to quit DVD Decrypter. Everything is fine if I use my external writer to rip to my internal hard drive or if I use my internal writer to rip to my external hard drive. DVD Shrink has no issues ripping with any combinations of my drives though but I have to use DVD Decrypter for some discs.

Why is DVD Decrypter doing this? Do I need to upgrade my firmware of my writer, rethink my setup or is it just that my external drives are incommpatible with DVD Decrypter?

  2. Probably, dvddecrypter hasn't been updated for years, probably doesn't recognize your writer.

You know, its be superceeded by Image burn

RIP to the internal HDD first.

The output on your HDD is now free of any copy protection (knock on wood) so you can then just copy it to the external HDD as you would any file or folder etc.

In some circumstances I still use DVD Decrypter but it can no longer RIP certain types of copy protected DVD discs in which case you do have to use something like DVDFab Decrypter.
