Hi,
I have a 2x1tb sc101 nas and i rip my dvd's via dvd decrypter,i like to keep them as near to dvd quality as possible, with 5.1 surround sound,at the moment i have them stored as single vob files is the audio within the vob 5.1 surround if not what is my solution????
Also,
Is there any other format that is near or as good as mpeg 2 vob and keeps the 5.1 but uses less disk space???
I hope someone can help,
Thanks.

Just ripping, leaves you with 100% of what you started with.
5.1 audio. If you had it, you still do, if you don't you don't.

You can compress to mpeg4. You can keep 5.1 audio.

Give avi.net a try. Instead of target bitrate, select single pass quant. The lower the number the better quality is. Find a number that provides the quality you want.
This is for you to test compression. You'll end up with mp3 audio but you can replace that with the original audio later.

If you're encoding to hit a specific filesize you set a target av. bitrate to achieve that.
If you're more worried about quality, you encode with a constant quant. Can't predict filesize but get the quality you desire.

REad this to get an idea about encoder modes:
