  1. hi all,
my buddy got a 42 inch plasma widescreen...so of course we started to test all backed up dvds to see how they look on such a sweet display...my question is that on some dvds...backups or originals the black bars on the top and bottom were still visible...i did notice there are different apect ratios on the dvd cases...some 1.85:1 others were different...
does anyone know why dvds that are supposed to be widescreen 16:9 have different ratios???? I thought that if the movie comes in the widescreen that would be enough to get rid of the black bars on a widescreen display...am i wrong?

It all has to do with the aspect ration. TVs may be 16:9, but a lot of DVDs are not 16:9. Aspect ratios come in a variety of different aspects.

    well... yeah.
a 16:9 TV (more properly known as a 1.77:1 TV) that is, say, 1m tall will be 1.77m wide. so if you have a 2.35:1 movie, it would need a screen that was 1m high and 2.35m wide to be displayed without borders. that will probably never happen in the home theatre world, 2.35 screens are restricted to your local cinema
