Hi! I am a self-confessed newbie, and my reason for registering is I have finished a photo slideshow in videostudio9 that I want to burn to DVD, but when I try to burn it I keep getting an error box pop up after about 2 mins saying "Convert step got some problems!" with a code (4101). Does anybody have any idea what this means or how to help me fix it? This project has been a serious labour of love that I just want to get it finished and burned to DVD. I've slowed the burn speed down to 4x and tried various quality DVD's, but other than that, I have no idea of what to do. We have burned other similar projects through this program and haven't had a problem, although they weren't quite as long. Any advise would be appreciated thanks, Tam

What I would do is export your video in either Uncompressed AVI or install and use Huffyuv codec AVI (if you are short on disk space), and PCM uncompressed audio. I would then use a different program to encode, author, and burn the dvd.
I've had large projects in Ulead before that somehow developed an export problem and was mostly unsuccessful at figuring it out, so the option to export in uncompressed avi format should work without any problems.
I would say there is an error in one of your various clips, etc that is causing the problem. Finding out which one in such a large project is very difficult.
Try the avi export and see if that will work.
Good luck. -
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. However, I must reveal my ingnorance.....I am a complete novice. I don't know what avi format is, let alone work out how to change and export my project using avi!
I don't seem to have any problems with disk space so I'd like to try the avi export. I just went back to my project to have a look around to see what I could work out on my own. I tried going to "Share" then "export" but I can only seem to select one clip to export. I have the project saved in my albums and tried to see what I could do from there, but there didn't seem to be any options that sound remotely like they have anything to do with avi or converting the format of the project.
I must be really honest and say that virtually nothing in your first paragraph made any sense to me....no wonder I've got problems, hey?! I am good at following instructions though so if you do have some time, I'm keen to give anything you suggest a go. -
I don't have v9 so the wording might be a little different.
You load your slideshow project into Ulead VideoStudio and you look up and see you are working in the EDIT tab.
Click on the SHARE tab.
Look down and click on CREATE VIDEO FILE
then CUSTOM (last entry)
Now you are looking at the CREATE FILE BOX. At the top choose a folder, then enter your desired filename. Now open the "SAVE AS TYPE" drop-down list box and choose "MICROSOFT AVI files". Then read the information in the SAVE OPTIONS area.
It should now say:
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps (PAL=720x576, 25fps)
Uncompressed
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
If it does not say the above setting then click on the "OPTION" button, go through the tabs and make it so.
Then do the "SAVE".
Using uncompressed format with a 720x480/576 framesize and PCM audio the filesize will be around 1.3GB per minute of running time. If disk space is short then download and install Huffyuv codec, use the OPTIONS button and set the compression to HUFFYUV. Using Huffyuv the filesize to expect will be about 400MB per minute or running time, or about 1/3 the space required by uncompressed. With either one you will loose no quality since they are both looseless.

If Ulead is able to create the video file from your collection of slideshow components then step one is a success. To test this simply play your AVI file and see if it plays correctly and looks right.
Once you are satified that the AVI file is ok then ULEAD might be able to do the conversion to MPEG-2. This time in the SHARE tab - CREATE VIDEO FILE - you would choose a DVD template and create the MPEG-2 DVD file. That would be the one labeled "NTSC DVD 4:3" for me here in the USA, for PAL it would be PAL DVD 4:3 I suppose. Ulead's DVD template will give a default value of 8.0Mbps bitrate 720x480/576 MPEG-2 file with LPCM audio. At your point in your life these settings are fine. lol
If this were to fail then simply create a new project that contains only your new AVI format file and try to encode that to MPEG-2. There are several different ways to do this.
This is a very simple process and I guess one you need to learn to do, so nothing will be lost by your attempts except maybe the fear of the unknown....
Good luck. -
Hi Scorpion King,
Thank you so much for your help!.....and humour!.....or humor you would probably say! Finally I have had a free moment to sit down and have a go at your suggestions (very difficult with a toddler and a new baby!). Your instructions were very easy to follow but unfortunately I it turns out that I do have a space issue as the project could only make it a quarter of the way through the rendering process.
Some time this week I should have a chance to have a go at the huffyuv but I'm not sure when....life is a little crazy right now.....
Anyhow, I'll let you know how it goes when I get to it and I hope you had fun yesterday celebrating Australia Day :P .....we sure did! I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers! -
Have you by any chance applied the latest updates? That may or may not help but if you haven't it's good place to start.

Try the following ...
From http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs90faq.htm
Q: After successfully burning discs for a number of times, I get one of the following messages now when I try to burn: "Report ID 0x800411da (4570)" or, more frequently, "Convert step got some problems (4101)." What should I do?
A: Instead of burning the project directly to disc, create a DVD compliant video file first and save it on your hard drive. After creating the file, create a new project and go to Share > Create Disc then insert the newly saved video file. Open the Project Settings dialog box [ Alt + J ] and select Do not convert compliant MPEG files then click OK . Burn the project to disc.
Tip : Refrain from inserting Project files onto the Timeline in Create Disc.
------------------
Look's like a simple screwup bug ... it's complaining that "a process" is not able to keep up with the current request ... it dosent say which though .
I'll get my tool's to dig through and see where the message come's from later .
What it is saying is ... don't burn the project directly to disc ... output as dvd to folder first ... then burn the output folder content to dvd ... should avoid the problem .
So create your project the way you want it .
Then select "create disc" .
Click next ... if no other editing is required .
Click next again ... now we have playback preview window (if something isnt right , go back and fix first) ... click next when ready .
The next window is broken into 3 pane's , the one in the middle ... uncheck "burn to disc" ... check "create dvd folders"
Click "burn" and wait .
It's bloody slow even on my new system ... freeware dose it faster .
You simply need to come back to "create disc" and add the output that was generated beforehand , check all is well , and burn this time to dvd ... simple when you have time to mess about with it ...
Mind you , while I have vs9 and vs10+ , I have never trusted it too far when it came down to burning to disc directly ... either nero v6.3 or imgburn to burn the output folder content ... never fail's .
==========
I'd like to know how this post went from dvd to "AVI" , as it's not required , and just add's a process that is not needed ... -
WOW! I can't believe it was January when I last tried to have a go at this! I've sat down and tried to get it sorted using the advice given. Thanks to all who have contributed, it's much appreciated.
I had a go at converting the files to AVI format, but I didn't have enough room on my hard drive (the project is 2G) so I thought that I would try BJ's suggestion as it sounded really easy. Great news!!!! It worked! I followed the steps you gave me BJ, and I had no problems. It took 5hrs to burn the folder then only 10mins to burn to disc. I was so excited.......unfortunately the excitement was very shortlived......
When we watched the disc, it cut out 1 min short of the end. Some of the music quality was pretty poor (songs that I had imported directly from CD into the project using the ulead function) and I found some other changes that needed to be made. So tonight I went back in to the project and fixed it up. I then went through the same steps as before (uncheck "burn to disc" and check "create DVD folders") then clicked "burn". After a minute the same "convert step got some problems" error came up. I kept on trying this way then tried to burn straight to disc, but I just keep getting the same error.
Do you have any more thoughts on this? -
