I have a JVC VHS-C camcorder which I was going to use to transfer old home movies to my Mac and then do some editing, etc. Unfortunately, the camcorder broke down before I could even begin my project.

I was going to hook it up to my newer mini DV camcorder and possibly transfer the movies that way. I'm not sure if that would have worked. Would it?

Any ideas or recommendations on options that I can take to transfer the VHS-C tapes to my Mac WITHOUT a VHS-C camcorder? I'm very much a newbie to this stuff so ... keep the language simple, please.

    Thank you.

start with any of these threads, they will tell you how to
get VHS into your mac. Basically take your tape
    (VHS/VHSC) , a VCR ( or a capture box, or a camera
with pass through analog) and a FireWire cable,
and hook it to your mac.

Do you intend trying to jam the VHS-C tape into a MiniDV camcorder or do you want to use the MiniDV camcorder as a passthrough device? The advice given to you already is relevant but only ifd you have something to play the tape in. I think the question really is, how can I play the VHS-C tape with a working VHS-C camcorder.

If this is the case, you need one of these http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-PV-P1-Vhs-C-Adaptor/dp/B00006JPWT so you can play your VHS-C tapes in a standard VHS VCR.
