    i have a project for my company. Basically we will have DVDs provided to us which we must then rip and edit. The editing will consist of either cropped portions of video, editing titles on frames and simple cuts. We will then take those clips and convert to flv format for the web. Which is the best software to handle this. We are looking at premiere and after effects. We aren't sure which to purchase as we look towards future projects beyond our editing needs currently. please advise.

    AfterEffects is good for titles and special effects you can do video editing and cropping, but editing and cropping is not what it's meant for.

    I think what you may want is Premiere. It can do the cropping and editing and you can add titles.

    If cost is a concern there are other great Video editing software that are much cheaper. You can check the tools section of this site and find a ton of video editors with 30 day trials.

    Good luck;

  4. After Effects is way cool but it's not really an editor, for that you really need Premiere. They work together very nicely, of course. So I'd say, get Premiere for starters, because it'll certainly do all your editing, then if you wanna "punch things up," then you bring in After Effects. That's why they call it After Effects.

    Although if the majority of your work is taking existing mpg video and doing simple cuts and titles, I'd really recommend a simple mpg editor like Womble MPEG Video Wizard. It's not very expensive ($150 for the newest version), and it's the fastest mpg cutter I've ever seen. The latest one handles AC3 natively and I think it'll even generate VOB files at the end so you pretty much can have a DVD ready to go when you're done. Don't quote me on that, though. But for really easy, really fast editing (as fits your current needs as described), I'd go for Womble over Premiere.

    Of course I have both, so there's that! Premiere is for AVI editing and big projects, and Womble is for later when I realize I wanna cut a few scenes here and there on something I already edited, and don't wanna start from scratch.

    So if you can swing the money, and you really plan on doing much more of any of this kind of stuff in the future, you really can't go wrong with the set:

    1) Premiere
    2) After Effects
    3) Womble MPEG Video Wizard

    Some prefer Vegas for AVI editing and that's cool, it just ain't my thing, and being you mentioned two Adobe products, those are my two votes.

    as mentioned - AE is not an editor ...

    vegas or it's little brother, movie something or other would be fair a better choice

    thanks. cause really once i edit the mpegs or avis i've ripped from our provided DVDs, i'll be posting on the web through flash, so really. as long as the quality is maintained up until my flash to compress, i'll be happy with whatever solution and software is available and quick. i did think premiere might be an overkill. i want to learn and it's the company's pocket, but still, don't kill a fish with an atomic bomb. k, thanks.
