  1. Has anyone noticed strange video artifacts.

I have posted a couple videos that completely baffle me.

Similar artifacts can be seen in the mushroom and ponocio
    clouds.

There are 2 types in this video. The first is very small fast and
lots of them. The second is much larger and slow moving. Almost
    cloaked.

I first noticed them when playing back the Mushroom Clouds in slow
motion. I used editing software to examine the artifacts closer up.
Geez me using editing software. But that was way way back.

You'll need to download the complete file to see them.

The only artifacts I can see are from compression. Mpeg compression, like it's predecessor jpeg, does not like high contrast edges. Even when give enough bitrate, it can be prone to producing artifacts. the fact the Google encodes again at low bitrates with an mpeg4 derived encoder only makes it worse.

Try posting a small segment of the original DV avi on rapidshare so we can see it without the extra problems introduced by google (and yes, this probably means you need to edit the clip)

Thanks Guns1inger for looking. I'll try and get a video clip that shows just what I am
talking about. The big one near the clouds is like a finger smudge moving across the screen
from left to right. The smaller fast ones seem to approach it. Almost like a starburst of
action then they are gone. I quit trying to capture them. Everybody was thinking I was
    nuts???

I just checked again the cloud video the position is 82 seconds in for 4 or 5 seconds.
I set my program to play at about 1/10 speed and can see the action. Editing software
where one can zoom in on the middle of the screen shows the stuff even better?

    Again Thanks

  4. Check these slowed down versions of the cloud and the bird at video.google.ca

Grab a copy of the original and look at it on your computer with
good editing software. They are there. Is it just artifacts. You'll
be able to see the large slow moving blurry one.

There is so much video noise from the TV screen that it is difficult to see what the hell is going on. However, from what I can see, it appears to be compression artifacts.

Was the footage coming straight from the camera, or from a DVD ?
If from a DVD, what software was used to make it ?
If from a camera, was it a mini-DV camera ?
Finally, why the hell can't you work with video like everyone else ? This zooming in a TV screen is about as silly as it gets.

Hitachi 350a Mini DVD camcorder downloaded to mpg (mpeg2) files on my laptop
I videoed in my laptop screen. I know it isn't recommended. I'd like to upload the
original files to some video hosting site so others could check it out. I'm sure
they could do a better job of showing these.

I do like the reshoots of the screen if the subject is not real close and the lighting
is good. Then the subject becomes a little easier to see.

The artifacts come from the camera's compression. Mini-DVD is a poor format for getting good quality footage.

That's what I was thinking. Just wondering if others had got them.

    Thanks

I haven't used a DVD camera - I edit, so DVD is no good. However, the more oyu try to put on a disc, the worse this will get. If you use the highest quality, shortest running time settings, you might get better quality. You will just have to carry more discs.

I use the highest quality and shoot short clips. A whole day of shooting will be 20 to 30
minutes. That's about 1 1/2 sides of my Mini DVD disks. I intend most of my video for
display on the net. So I try and get as close as possible to my subjects. The loss of
quality and small screen size demand it.

  11. I just uploaded the original mpeg2 video to:

    http://www.archive.org/details/Strange_strange_artifacts_in_the_clouds

113MB file took 30 minutes to upload

    Check this video more closely

This shot is certainly clearer, so most of the artifacts from the previous versions will have been from the google video compression.

That said, I can't see anything odd in the clip. I have zoomed, slowed and examined, and cannot see anything untoward. I have frame by framed the section from 82 seconds onwards and it looks like, well, clouds.

Perhaps your friends are right ?

I should get a copy from the archive.org site just to see
    if anything has changed.

There are a couple others looking at this video. I'll let
you know what they find. Or don't.
