Hi guys,
I have just bought a new laptop which came with Vista installed as standard. I bought it with the express intention of backing up part of my DVD collection onto external harddrives before I move 12,000 miles to live in Oz this summer, and have to put everything I can't carry into storage for a couple of years. Problem is I can't get it to play my DVDs. I'm using DVDShrink to back the discs up, which seems to work fine, but When I load either the Video_TS folder or the original DVD in VLC it will load the menus, and play the sound, but I get no image, just a black screen. The same software works fine on my desktop with XP installed.
What am I doing wrong (other than running Vista)? Is there any way to correct this problem short of formatting my new system and installing XP (which is possible, but a bit of a hassle)?
p.s. Any technical language is likely to shoot way over my head.

Maybe
1. Open VLC media player.
2. Click on Settings and select Preferences… .
3. Expand Video and click on Output modules.
4. Check Advanced options in the lower right corner.
5. Set Video output module to either “DirectX“, “OpenGL” or “Windows GDI“

I had same problem with Vista and VLC....but I didn't test that then.
