  1. Has anyone done any kind of quality tests with TMPGEnc?

I use the Automatic-VBR setting at the minute and the results seem fine.

I was wondering if the 2-pass VBR produces and significant improvements.

    Thanks.

TMPGenc almost always delivers very good results according to my tests anyway, but the real VBR mode is of course the best one. It's taking a lot of extra time, though, since TMPGenc needs to scan through the whole movie before starting the actual encode. But hey! It's always worth it

  3. It's true .... the 2 pass VBR mode in TMPGenc is superb ..... but it will take about DOUBLE the amount of time that your Automatic_VBR does!

Cinema Craft Encoder is still regarded by purists to be the best MPEG2 encoder as it can do 3 pass (and more) VBR - but it costs an arm and a leg!!!

There are rumours that the eagerly awaited PRO version of TMPGenc will have an option to encode with upto 20 pass VBR !!!
I wonder how long that will take on my little Celeron 500??!!!??

Think I better upgrade, don't you?!!?

  4. hmmm thanks for the info

I think im gonna do a few tests on maybe a 5 min clip from a DVD.....ill post the results....Infact ill stick examples on my site and post a link.

I have heard that CCE is the best quality but can i hell get it work on my PC.

I like TMPGEnc as it seems relatively straight forward. I especially like the ease of which i can change from wide screen DVD to the NoMargin Output which is better for viewing on my normal 4:3 TV.

I know this is regarded as a big no no by most but id rather lose some of the edges andhave a larger picture.

Ill keep you posted as to how i get on.
