I have several music videos that I have downloaded off of music.yahoo using SDP. When I was using XP they played find with WMP. When I moved them to a new laptop with Vista Home Premium WMP gives the message.

Windows media player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

I can view the video fine if I stream it from yahoo, just not when it is local on the vista laptop. I have also tried getting a fresh copy of the videos using the vista laptop with the same results. Finally the icon for the video does show a still image from the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may not work, but try VLC media player and see if it can open the files. It plays quite a few formats that WMP can't. There are several 'flavors' of WMV and you may have a DRM protected file or just something out of spec with Vista's WMP version.

I downloaded VLC media player ver 0.8.6b which is the latest. It plays the audio, but I still have no picture.

Here is some new information. I can run the wmv files through TMPGenc Xpress and make another wmv file out of it. The new file plays fine. Of course this adds an extra step for me and an extra cost, so I would still rather find a way to just play the originals.
