  1. I would like opinions on what everyone uses these days for their VHS -> DVD transfers. Since VHS is 4:3, do you create 4:3 menus?
I've been using 4:3 menus, but my widescreen TV is a pain. I have to manually change the TV back to 4:3 mode, in order for the menus to appear correctly. The movie displays properly however no matter what mode my TV is in. I'm thinking that it may be less pain to just create 16:9 menus. Then I can just leave my TV in "wide" mode, and the video will still display properly in 4:3.

  2. It sounds like the menus don't have the proper flags:

If that doesn't help then you will have to manually change the tv mode.

Check your DVD player setup as well. I know that I have no problems with 4:3 or 16:9 menus on mine.

Do 4:3 menus on commercial discs work ?

  4. DVD player was set up wrong. It was an option for 4:3 aspect (Auto/normal/stretch). It was on "Auto", which squeezed the picture. I put it on normal.

But I would still like to know, if my source is 4:3, is it more appropriate to use 4:3 menus? Since all TV's are going 16:9, I would think 16:9 menus would look better, even though the movie itself will play 4:3.

  5. Well I guess TMPGENC DVD Author 2 does not set the flags appropriately. I can't have 16:9 menus, with a 4:3 source. I tried creating a disc, but I had to switch my TV to "wide mode" for the 16:9 menus, and then back to "normal mode" for the 4:3 movie.

This is odd, since I have seen commercial discs that have 16:9 menus, but 4:3 video. Guess I'll have to start learning Vegas DVD Architect.
