  1. I am trying to backup a DVD - the widescreen version of Beer League.

It plays fine at widescreen in the DVD player.

In most instances, it gets squeezed to 4:3 on the computer. The DVD itself plays back at 4:3 using Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Both DVDfab and DVD Decrypter do the same thing.

Why am I getting this behavior on this DVD?

If the backup plays in widescreen on a standalone player, it's just a aspect adjustment problem with the computer. Most players should give you choices of aspect ratios. Many videos off the net have to be adjusted for proper playback. In their case, the settings were done incorrectly when encoding.

What are you using to backup the DVD? The programs you listed are decrypters, they just put the DVD on your hard drive, though DVD Decrypter can backup if your media is large enough, such as DL, to hold the full DVD.

  3. Yes, the computer thinks the aspect should be 4:3. Is this just a problem with this disk?

I have tried both DVDfab and DVD Decrypter to backup the DVD. I am not aware of any selection settings in these programs to force the aspect ratio.

I think redwudz is talking about a setting in the program you are using to play the DVD on your computer - i.e. PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. Not the program you are using to rip the DVD to your HD.

What program are you using to play/watch the DVD on your computer?

  5. IfoAR2WS is a simple utility to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 widescreen in DVD IFO files. IfoAR2WS sets the aspect ratio to 16:9 in the video attributes of the *.IFO files of a DVD. Requires .net framework.
    Get it FREE from: http://www.svcd2dvd.com/Software/IfoAR2WS.aspx

But it sounds like the problem is just on the computer, not on the TV, which leads you to believe that it's not a problem with the AR flag in the ifo file.....

  7. Yes - I tried IfoAR2WS but it did not do the trick.

There are two IFO files. It only adjusted VIDEO_TS.IFO, not VTS_01_0.IFO.

I have the problem with WMP and DVDFab.

I've also noticed something similar with a store bought DVD.
