I've been using 123 DVD Converter for this task.
The problem is that I get major quality problems, with fuzzy lines at all points of motion in my videos.
Take a look at this sample vid to see what I mean:

Is there any freeware out there that will do a better job?

Looks like some interlace problems.
I would rip out the clips with dvd shrink using the reauthoring mode, https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=198813#step1 and if the vob is small enough upload it directly to youtube. If that wont work convert the cutted vob to divx with mp3 using autogk.
