We have been in business for 6 years producing wedding videos for clients and up until two months ago we have been almost 100% successful with our DVD media. We were using Maxell DVD media with printed stick on labels with great success. We decided to move to printing the labels on disk and purchased a printer but we can't seem to find inkjet printable media that is as solid as the Maxell. We tried Maxell inkjet printable and Tayo Uden printable media with poor results from our customers on both. What are our options? Here's our workflow:
    Edit in Avid Xpress Pro
Export to TMPgenc to create the Mpeg
Author in Encore 1.5 and burn in Encore
    or
    Edit in Avid Xpress Pro
Burn to hardware DVD recorder - Panasonic DMR-ES15 or Panasonic DMR-E55

We've had trouble with all of the above methods, however, the discs play fine on our personal DVD players both at the office and at home so we can't recreate the problem in our own environment. Any ideas or any other troubleshooting that we need to do?

    Thanks!

  2. My preferenses of course, but
I would use single layer DVD-R media or at the very least if you have to use +R media, set the book type to ROM
I would use Sorenson Squeeze instead of TMPGenc
    I would burn with Imgburn
tgpo famous MAC commercial, You be the judge?

If you are having a problem with Taiyo Yuden media, it is virtually certain that there are other problems that are causing this. My hunch is your Panasonic drives. These drives are not high on the list of good drives. Although there are other good ones, it's hard to go wrong with Pioneer drives.

Yup ... Taiyo Yuden media is not the problem here ... its the most reliable media you can buy ... as previously suggested use the -r variety or if you must use +r then get a drive capable of bitsetting +r media to rom format .... as also pointed out its hard to go wrong with a pioneer drive (altho these can't do bitsetting ... (unless you use a hacked firmware)) ... for best results burn with imgburn

Those models are standalones, not PC burners, though it seems quite odd that a Panasonic DVD recorder would have issues with quality DVD-R media like TY and Maxell, considering Panasonic/Matsushita is the main force behind the DVD Forum and the DVD-R/RW format. What are the issues the customers have?

  6. Can you find out from your clients as to what model dvd players they are using.

Also, you may consider moving to a duplicator card and pioneer burners. It is a minimal costs.

    Here is my work flow:

    Edit in Avid Liquid 7
Author and Export to DVD with Avid Liquid 7
I usually then create an ISO image from Nero7 from the exported ISO from Avid LE7 (I like to put the original pictures on the DVD as well)
I use the TDK Printable Media From Costco
Most of my projects end up being replicated 100-600 copies, so I use a 7 target (Acard 2033s) duplicator.

I usually test my source in my Sony DVD player, Phillips Player, and my Apex before I mass duplicate.

I use Pioneer 110's in the duplicator.

From your work flow description, I suspect a problem more related to your recording device but it is hard to say. It could simply be an incompatability with your burner and media. Do you have another burner that you can try. The Pioneer burners are cheap $40, maybe put this in your case and try to burn one this way.

An extra point .... make sure that any Taiyo Yuden disks you buy are genuine as there are a lot of fakes on the market ... Ty disks are more expensive than most other makes but the quality is unsurpassed (you get what you pay for) .... if you see cheap ty's on sale then they are most likely fakes (Princo is a company in Taiwan and is well known for faking dvdr's from Taiyo Yuden, Ritek and even Maxell as well as others)

Well, it's unlikely one will get TY "fakes" if they buy discs that are advertised as genuine Taiyo Yuden made in Japan, rather than some off-name brand that simply says it has the TYG02 media code.
