    Hi again
I have settled for winmenc to convertasf and wmv files because it is fast and I can set the audio parameters as I want to however when encoding these files to mpg 1 or 2 I cannot play them in MPC I get the error message that the codec is not installed. ffdshow has them but everytime I install it I get cnflicts with Powerdvd player among other things.
Would it be posible to get these decoders codecs without installing ffdshow?
    thank you

So Xvid isn't an option then ? Another option is to associate files with, for example *.MPEG to a different player, such as the portable MPUI

Unrar and place in your Winmenc folder. It is a pretty nice front end to mplayer.exe with built-in mpeg decoding.
    mpui.rar

There are several free mpeg2 decoders. Give them a try.
You could also purchase one if not satisfied.

Why not play them in PowerDVD?
    Or another player...
