    Hi Guys,

Can anyone suggest a burner to replace my NEC 3500A:

    Required:

Fast Reads - primary use ripping backups of movies.

    Easy Control - ON/OFF rip-lock

    Internal

Note: The drive suggested would either be master or slave, shared with a Plextor 760A

Would either drive perform less by being a slave?

    Thanks
    Rico

If you want a fast ripper get a LITEON 18x or 20x dvd burner. Some LG & PIONEER drives have riplock so ripping spds are slower. Any dvd burner connected as slave will work perfectly fine with no performance loss.

    Hi Budz,

So Liteon 18 or 20x will rip (read) at native speed of drive?

My Plextor has riplock on & will rip at 2x, if I don't turn it off.

Will the LITEON (rip faster than 2x) give flawless burns, of movies?

    Thanks
    Rico

The LITEON 18x and 20x dvd burners do not have riplock on the drives. It can read 14-16x spd for single layer dvd media and about 10x spd for dual layer media. On one of my computers I have the LITEON 18A1P that does most of my ripping. As I mentioned there is no riplock on the LITEON drives but on some PIONEER & LG drives riplock exists. Although some of those brands you can use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to remove the riplock. You want a fast ripper the LITEON drive is the one to purchase. FYI some of the drives are loud when ripping. I have my LITEON 18A1P using C0deKing's fast patched hacked firmware.

    Hi Budz,

Do you know if BenQ is riplocked? Or how could I find out about the drives riplock? Also reading at higher speed, does this cause noticeable errors on playback (DVD Player). I was looking at the BenQ DW1655.

    Thanks

reading at higher speeds wouldn't cause noticable errors on a dvd player. the BENQ 1655 is hard to find since LITEON bought their optical storage division. with the BENQ drives you can use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to remove the riplock on the BENQ drives. Do some searching and reading at the different forums at Cdfreaks.com. They have BENQ, LITEON, PIONEER, LG, SAMSUNG, BTC, NEC & PLEXTOR forums at Cdfreaks.com. There's a long ass thread regarding "BENQ DVD WRITER ARE VANISHING", check it out.

If you can purchase a BENQ 1655 you'll be one of those lucky ones cuz it's no longer manufactured. Take a look at that long ass thread. Lots of useful information there at Cdfreaks.com forums.

Instead of going by random replies to a thread like this, take a look at the hardware lists.

    Hi Guys,

I installed the LiteOn as a (slave) drive, on my secondary IDE cable, the other drive on the secondary (master) is a Plextor 760A, both drives report Ultra DMA 4.

I use the LiteOn for the rip & the Plextor for the burn. My thinking is/was the LiteOn would give speedy reads (no rip-lock), & nice burns using the Plextor. I also use DVDnextCopy's two burner option.

Sometimes on movies, the LiteOn will rip a movie in 7min. other times its 37 min. when I get a 7 min rip the LiteON is fairly loud & the 30+ min reads the drive is quiet. I've tried ANYdvd drive at "fast & noisy" & the burner default. The AnyDVD setting does not seem to work or have an effect on rip speed. Is there something I'm missing, in order to get more consistent "rip" speeds? Also when I get the 7 min. rips, I never get DNC's movie preview, during the rip.

    Thanks
    Rico

I have a LiteOn 20 x dvd burner. my memorex reads faster than the LiteOn. The LiteOn will not write any cd's at all. I have tried five different brand of cd"s with no luck. I tried burning at 20 x and was only good for 1 copy and it messed up the next 3 attempts. Down with LiteOn and stick to Nec,s or Memorex"s burners.

Memorex uses rebadged LITEON & NEC drives and now uses LG as well.
