And the simple solution is to disable thumbnail generation. It's worth reading the TechNet thread to find out more about this specific issue.

I guess I should throw in at least one voice of dissent. I like Vista. It doesn't crash, it doesn't have problems transferring large files, it has no problems deleting or accessing files over the LAN, it doesn't do anything I find objectionable. And I do run gigabit ethernet. I did disable UAC, but only because I have AVG, Spyware Blaster and Spybot, that do much better and don't bother me every time I try to do anything on the computer.
Vista is set up by default to protect the absolute nerd. If you aren't in that group, you have little to worry about.
Yes, it needs a fair amount of memory, and CPU speed, but I have both on my computers. I like the file handling better than XP, and the desktop graphics are nice. It loads quicker than XP. It makes XP look old fashioned, similar to when I switched from W98 to XP.
If you look to: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List; There are not that many programs that it doesn't support. I have had zero problems with drivers, even on a fairly new MB.
And I have had very few problems with the programs I run, both video and graphic. I am running it on a AMD dual core CPU and a Gigabyte MB with about a 16% overclock, and perfectly stable.
Maybe I am the only one out there with no problems. -

But, such are consumerism and capitalism that "improvements" will always come along. Just like with new cars, televisions, cell phones etc etc. -

That said I'm dual-booting it with XP simply for the video side, but Vista is triggering a backlash in this area, perhaps deserved, perhaps not. -
The linked article in the OPs post mentions 256 MB of RAM. What would anyone expect with only 256 MB of RAM with Vista?
For those who want to have a really basic OS, you can rummage around on Ebay and buy MS-DOS and be happy with your "super basic OS". Or if you really want a good dumbed-down computing experience, you can look a little harder and get a copy of CP-M and run it on an old Z-80 PC. This is a bit like someone whining about Photoshop being too complicated and "sticking with" MS Paint. Some people just can't cope with change. They are usually, lazy, stupid or stubborn. So they cover up by attacking whatever is new. -

As a side thought re
OS; One great thing about DOS was virus removal. It was only with the establishment of the GUI interface (AKA Windows 3.xxx) that viruses really got difficult and hard-core. The advantage of DOS is that a virus had no way of protecting itself such as modern rootkits and virii nowadays that immediately re-establish themselves when deleted; once you found out where the problem file was, you entered DOS, navigated to that file and deleted it. End of virus. Now I tear my hair out removing a virus, and if a rootkit sometimes it is actually faster to just reformat the unit and reimage.

But I don't want to be informed. I just want to push as much negative news as I can without being concerned about silly things like 'context'.
It's important to know where the bugs lie in any OS, and this is another one which, for me and for many users, could be pretty significant. -
New computers come with Vista and psychologically it is hard to order XP or prev version OS. In my opinion they have to deal with it until it is established. Microsoft has been calling it challenges and cost of ownership!!

unfortunately, new comps already come loaded with vista and the consumer has no choice...my way or the highway kinda thinking
