I dont mean converted DVDs, I mean I have some terrible HK subtitled shows, and I also own fansubbed Avi's which I used until I bought the DVD's

What I am wondering is can I rip subs from the Avi's and encode them for the DVD's replacing the current streams.

I know the timing may be off, but im not too bothered about that.

What I was thinking was something silly like using a avi editor to cut out the adverts from the Avi, which arent on the DVD's to make the file pretty much the same.

As the fansubs have promos at end of episode etc.

Just as I dont want to spend hours converting Avi's and want best pic possible as I have just got a HD tv.

I asked a similar question before a few months back, but that was from DVD to DVD.

Oh and the Avi's are hard subbed.

no - you would have to recreate them

Are there any contacts, URLs, forums, for the people who made the fansubs?
They must have them in text (probably ASS) form.

There are several tools you can use to resync them, especially if you rip the DVD ones and match some with your new ones.

I live in Hong Kong, so I know how bad legit subtitles can be. Bootleg ones are often obviously generated by an automatic translator and make little or no sense; or are sometimes from another movie entirely.
