Anyone have any experience with these types of speakers (the ones that are like a bar that attaches to the bottom of an LCD monitor)? How do they sound? Can you use them with a separate subwoofer?

    Thanks!

They sound.... uh...um....for lack of a better word....bad. There's nothing there - no top end, no bottom end. Even the volume seriously lacks. I'm not an audio quality snob, but you'd do so much better with a 2.1 Altec speaker system (subwoofer included) - $49 at Target. These guys are really good sounding, and the sub makes all the difference in the world.

Get the Altecs, even though you might be tempted to get the less expensive GE or Creative Labs sets. The sound difference is significant. You'll always justify it to yourself when you pay a bit more, but you're satisfied with the purchase.

Then again, I have a friend who bought a car without even a radio installed and hasn't bothered to put one in after 3 years. He drives an hour each way to work and back.

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned my motives in the original post. I'm not averse to spending money to get something of better quality, I was just looking for a way to get a cleaner desktop (real desktop, not OS desktop ). I don't like having my two speakers on the desk. My sub is under the desk, which is fine, but the two satellites are kind of in the way.

    Oh well.
