    hi,

i'm trying to back up a DVD to XviD using ffmpegx (mencoder). when i try to encode after setting preferences, the process finishes in under 10 seconds!? obviously the file i'm left with is crapola. any ideas where i'm going wrong?

the install of ffmpegx went fine. i ripped the DVD to my HD using Mac the Ripper and save encoded file to my Movies folder. have browsed through the log file afterwards which means very little to me. should i look about to install some components that might be missing? i thought that everything required for the business is already included w/ ffmpegx.

[i've tried to rip to MP4 which appeared to work (ie it took hours processing) but the file i was left with was rubbish.]

    version of ffmpeg - 0.0.9x (0.0.9x r2)
    my machine is a pismo 500 w/ 768 MB RAM OSX10.4.0

i include a copy of the log file which resulted after the 10 second rip. don't know if it's important or not but the part "1 duplicate frame(s)!" is displayed in red...

    any suggestions very welcome!

after some digging around it seems this problem might be down to the processor i have - G3. i've tried installing the G3 specific binaries but the result is still the same - encoding takes no time and the resulting .avi doesn't play.

if any G3 users out there have a solution i'd be glad to hear it!

"The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec." sounds ominous...

I don't know how to solve this problem in ffmpegx, but an alternative is to use D-Vision3. It's a free tool, and it's never given me a lick of trouble. After ripping, double-check that the VIDEO_TS folder plays properly, and then let D-Vision have at it.

It should run fine on a G3.

    thanks for the reply tom.

i've begun ripping with dvision - it seems to be working but very slowly. looks like it will take 36 hours to make a complete rip maybe my machine is too old for this sort of stuff.
