I have about 650 dvd-r movies and had some problems for sometime with skiping in my stand alone player. I found that the labels on my dvds were the problem. On how to remove, I let them soke in warm water for about 3 to 5 minutes and removed the lable with a plastic edge. Worked great for me. Hop this helps someone els with same problem.
Good Luck.

Add just a drop of dishwashing soap in your warm water and it works even better. They usually slide off.
Many of us have found paper labels to cause problems with DVDs. There are quite a few posts discussing this, even a sticky in the Media forum: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=138166
If you need to label, use a Sharpie or a printer that prints directly on the disc.
