    Does anyone know of a good free or inexpensive utility that will convert .avi files so that they can be played on a pocket pc?

    Some, avi w divx video, xvid, mp3 audio,mpeg4,mp4,h.264 etc. etc....

    Huh? I was asking lglrgl what his "pocket PC" player accepts. If he has an AVI and it plays AVI - then there's not much need for conversion, is there?

    Obviously he needs AVI to pocket pc format ,whatever his accepts.... according to OP...

    Core Media Player for Pocket PC $10 . That player has internal support for the popular codecs. Conversion of those AVIs might not even be needed.

    Then use WinMenc or any of the dozen or so mencoder front-ends to create the media if you still need to convert the AVIs
