Dear forum
Concerning this query, please forgive if I seem uninformed i am just a newbie
I have been using the free prog dvdbuilder to author dvds then I burn using nero 7 to create a dvd for watching on tv. I have been using mpeg2 files I got by recording tv programs using dvb-t usb dongle.
I wish to know what total size of file (mpeg2) I can get on one dvd.
When I assemble the files for authoring, they total , say, 4.gigbyte
After dvd builder has assembled the files in the video-ts folder they have increased in total size. (to about 4.4gigbyte )
When I tried to burn this folder to dvd-video using nero it said it was 4.9 gbyte and too much for a dvd disk .
therefore I would like to ask what max mpeg2 file total size can I start off with for dvd authoring
I would like answer for both single layer and dual layer dvds please
Yours with thanks
Ian

4.37 GB = 4480 MB
7.95 GB = 8150 MB

There is no 100% answer possible, it depends on the mpeg2 file itself and the authoring process. I don't know dvdbuilder, therefore I also don't know if it reencodes the video (in this case there is no 'precalculation' possible). If Nero wants to add an additional 0.5 GB, it looks like Nero wants to reencode the files too... 'Simple burning' would add max. 1 MB to the total size of your VIDEO_TS folder (filesystem overhead).therefore I would like to ask what max mpeg2 file total size can I start off with for dvd authoring
For elementary streams (separate video + audio files) the total size can roughly be calculated:
Totalsize_in_MB = Videosize_in_MB + Audiosize_in_MB + (VideoDuration_in_seconds * 0.011) + some MBs for menus if any.GUI for dvdauthor:

...nero isnt being an idiot

Use ImgBurn to burn Video DVDs. The new 2.2 version is superb! (and free)GUI for dvdauthor:
