How are you transferring it to the computer? Does the camera create a DVD disc or just save it on the camera hard drive? Telling us your camera model may help.

DVD is MPEG-2 (Usually). Do you want to keep it in that format for editing? You can use a program like VOB2MPEG to convert the DVD VOB files to one large MPEG, then use a MPEG editor. Or, quick and easy, rename the VOBs to .mpg and that should work.

WMM is not too great for editing MPEG format, as you would still have to use another program to convert it back to MPEG when you are done. I've done this by outputting as DV-AVI, then encoding that back to MPEG for DVD creation.

You could try a freeware MPEG editor like Cuttermaran, but easy would be to find a program like Ulead or one of the more economical All-in-One type of MPEG editors, that can also convert back to DVD format. It depends on how much you want to edit and how much you want to spend.

MPEG-VCR is one of the least expensive MPEG editors. If you keep the video in MPEG format, then you just need to author it back to DVD format. GUI for dvdauthor is one freeware authoring program. Payware, TMPEGnc DVD Author is fairly easy to use. Most of those programs have trial versions, so you can test them out first.

But try out VOB2MPEG for starters and you should at least get it into a easier to work with format. Another program for extracting MPEGs from a DVD is DVD Decrypter.

There is no FILE format. mpeg is a file format. AVI is a file format.

VOB2MPG will extract the video and audio information from your DVD VOB files and create an mpg file. This is a free program. You can then edit this using an mpg editor.

Virtualdubmpeg2 can read VOB or mpg files and convert them to DV-AVI if you also install the Panasonic DV codec. These are free.

I'm not sure you really understand what it is that you need or want.

If you are using Windows Movie Maker, convert to DV avi and work from there.
