I use TDK from Newegg exclusively for all my important burns. Inexpensive and only 2 failures in over 800 video and data recordings, usually between 4.30Gb and 4.43Gb.

What I'm now looking for is bottom-of-the-barrel cheap disks to archive 1000+Gb of data that is not all that important. As long as the majority burn and verify successfully I will be satisfied. A few coasters now and a couple archives lost later due to time degradation will not be of concern.

Is hoping for 8x-16x 100ct @$12 or under still pie-in-the-sky?

    Cheers!

If you don't mind losing data in the future due to bad media, then why archive it at all?

It's kind of like hording old magazines, you'll probably never thumb through them again yet they get saved just for the sake of possibly being able to locate that article if and when it ever tickles your fancy.

CompUSA frequently runs specials on 100 disk spindles of cheap unbranded media, mostly prodisc but also other media IDs. Price can be as low as $10.00/100. They are clearly production overruns, with some spindles of printables.

I use them in my Lite-on DVD recorder, it doesn't complain about them and they are more reliable in this device the RW media.

same with staples, and office depot. Just keep an eye on your fliers, or stop in and see what they have. Also are you looking for + or - dvdr?

I've never seen unbranded media at staples or officemax. House brands yes, no-name -never. With the execption of black Friday, I haven't seen prices below $25/100.

    Thanks for the replies.

Can't remember the last time I've been in a brick-n-mortar computer store to browse. The closest I come is ordering Seagate HD's online from Circuit City and walking no more than 10 feet in the store to the pick-up counter. Recall back in the day buying CD spindles from CompUSA and now that we have one local (18 miles) that's a possibility. Will also keep an eye on the fliers.

edit - Forgot to mention + or -, makes no difference (ND-3550A).

    Cheers!

Did you get your rebate on those Playos yet? Got my staples rebates on everything I bought that day but not the Playos.

Is it my imagination or are the Staples Easy Rebates getting WAY SLOWER these days? May just be the holiday sales crunch but they used to be way more timely I THOUGHT.

They increased the return period over the holidays and added to delay. My latest rebates have taken 4 weeks, and all of my rebates for Nov Dec have been paid except Playo. Its been validated by Staples and is waiting for them.

Futureshop and Staples have both had specials on Verbatim + and - 16X over the past few months as low as $20CAD/100. The Source (Radio Shack) has also sold them that low around Christmas/Boxing Day. No necessity to use crap discs anymore.....

What's with all the "old" guys responding?! LOL!!! Just kidding, heck, I'm only a weekend away from being part of that distinguished crowd.

Much appreciate all the responses. Believe now that my hope wasn't pie-in-the-sky. Will keep an eye out for the mentioned sources.

As for Newegg, like I noted earlier I use them all the time for my TDK disk purchases with free shipping but they dumbfound me sometimes with their variable and non-combinable shipping costs. Must also admit that I'm getting averse to mail-in-rebates for a multitude of reasons.

    Cheers,
    golem
