Is there any way you can determine which copy protection a cd or dvd has on it?

Audio CDs will tell you if they have copy protection most of the time (remember the Sony Rootkit ?) because they have to warn you that said copy protection might also stop your CD from playing.
As for DVDs, no, there is no way short of ripping it, in which case it doesn't matter. A lot of public domain material has no protection, but any studio release will have at least CSS and macrovision. If you always assume it has the latest protection, and rip based on that assumption, you won't get caught out.Read my blog here.
