Hitachi's Deskstar® 7K1000 will begin shipping to retail customers in the first quarter of 2007 at a suggested retail price of $399 (USD), or 40 cents per gigabyte (GB). Hitachi has made great hard drives for many years. Usually overpriced.

Seagate expects to be the number one vendor of 1TB drives by the time Hitachi gets its volume ramped up. And probably will.

1TB is new but not a breakthrough in disk technology.
