Tmpeg 2.5 won't accept Ac3 audio from a vob file or demuxed m2vac3. I loaded a DIVX I had made with ac3 audio and to my surprise it accepted and converted the ac3 audio to mp2!
Why will it accept ac3 in an avi file but not a vob file?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I can tell you that I don't advise that you use TMPGenc (you really should say this and not Tmpeg by the way) to convert audio from AC3. BeSweet or BeSweet GUI are better choices. Yes, it's easy in TMPGenc to have it convert the audio, but I don't think it's the best choice in terms of quality.

To be honest, I don't think TMPGEnc can ever handle .ac3 audio. Not sure why it would find it in a DivX.

But for the time being... Why do you need to convert the audio? Split out the audio track, convert the video using TMPGEnc's 'video only' converting option, and then use the split-out audio track for authoring (i have no sync problems ever using this method)

You've got all the tools you'll need. Select the 'Mpeg Tools' section under the 'File' menu in TMPGEnc. Choose demultiplex and select the .vob file you want to demux. You'll probably have to select 'all files' because I don't think it will display .vob's by default. Double click on the audio stream and save it to a file. Select this audio file when authoring (I'm assuming you'll be authoring this).

If you NEED to convert it to .wav for editing, try TMPGEnc Sound Player (ac3 encoder/decoder). Convert it to a .wav, make your modification, then convert back to ac3. If TMPGEnc sound player chokes on decoding .ac3, try ac3tool for the decoding only.

Actually it can find and handle ac3 with the proper type of file. Like the OP said it won't take it when opening vob files and I don't think mpeg either, but it will with avi. As strange as that may sound, thats the way my Tmpgenc Plus 2.5 is working anyway.

    Good luck.

That's the weirdest sh*t I've ever heard... I've never been able to get ac3 to open with TMPGEnc. It's usually off-to-virtualdub whenever I need to get the ac3 outta an .avi... If the program has the ability to decode AC3, then maybe we just need to reorder the decoder priorities? Anyone know?

Even stranger,I had a version of Tmpeg that would encode ac3 from a vob file a few years back. I went back thru my download directory and found it and installed it on my current computer and it will encode ac3 from a vob file. The video is choppy but the audio is decoded. This version is from 2002 and I would been running win98 and fat32. My current computer runs XP with NTFS and I suspect that's causing the choppy playback. Version was 2.52.34.129 dated 3/11/02

For AC3 in AVI type 2 install AC3ACM and give the AVI2(OpenDML) File Reader higher priority than DirectShow and see how you go. This should load AVI type 2 with AC3 2.0/5.1
I havnt played with TMPGEnc and AC3 for years now but I'm sure you can also use DirectShow File Reader with AC3Filter set to output 2.0 stereo only.
Trying to open 5.1 through Directshow and AC3Filter set to 5.1 will not work!

Demux to D2V plus .wav with DGindex and then load them into TMPGEnc.
