This is the only reference I can find, apparently an audio file? http://www.monkeysaudio.com/

Appears to be a Mac format, but it looks like there are codecs here for Windows.

  3. I use the RadLight APE DirectShow filter on Win2k but i've heard it doesn't work with Win98 so i'll give both links.

    RadLight APE DShow:
    http://www.rarewares.org/files/lossless/RadLightAPE.exe

DCoders MonkeySource (I think it works with both 98 and 2k-Xp:
    http://download.dsp-worx.de/?f=MonkeySource_v1.00_Installer.zip

You'll still have to browse for "All-Files" with Windows Media Player.

I fiddled with the registry on my Win2k machine and added the extension to my system.

Is it possible to convert this to a more compatible format like MP3 using dbpoweramp? And how do I play using Winamp?

Install the Monkey's Audio codec from the main site. It installs a Winamp plugin. Monkey's Audio is the most popular lossless audio codec out there. Basically, it compresses songs much like a ZIP or RAR file, and thus you do not lose quality when encoding, as information is not stripped out, just made smaller.

I installed that and then even restarted the computer but the APE won't play in Winamp. It opens but it won't play even when I press the play button.

For all audio file playing needs:

    www.foobar2000.org

This is one awsome player, is there anything it can't do?
It converts between formats, supports APE, FLAC, WAVPACK, mp3, MPC (musepack), just to name a few. You can add/remove/edit & batch process Tags. I supports .CUE files.

Best of all, it is totally free. (Yes there is a free version of Winamp, bit it is crippled). Honestly, I wish all software worked as well as foobar.

On a side note, APE is popular, but FLAC is gaining (and possibly has surpassed APE). FLAC is an opensource lossless compression format. It consumes less resources (CPU power) to playback, and is crossplatform (Linux support, probably MAC too). As a trade off, FLAC files are slightly larger than APE. FLAC can also be supported in hardware playback (There are a few portable players that support it).

i have found foobar2000 and used it to play my .ape files. I have also found out that the .ape files play in The Core Media Player. One thing i would like to know is, how can I put these .ape files on cd? I can only play them on my computer, i would like to take the songs with me? Does anyone know? Or have you done this before?

you can use foobar2000.org, and The Core Media File to play .ape extensions. They both worked for me.

foobar2000 works great to play them, but if you ever want to burn them to a CD,

well if you have Nero this will work without need to re encode them

    http://www.bitburners.com/Nero_Audio_Plugins_by_MauSau/

if you want to encode the in foobar2000 just high light the files you want to encode, then right click then, and encode them what ever format you want, for mp3 make sure you have LAME MP3 Encoder

If you installed the necessary components with Foobar2000, it can write audio CDs, but I highly recommend Burrrn for creating audio CDs. It is simple, and even handles all types of .cue files created by EAC. It is a stand alone application, requires no installation, and is freeware.

Just remember, some formats are lossy, and others are lossless. APE, FLAC, TTA, and wavpack (.wv) are lossless, although wavpack can also be lossy/hybrid (.wv + .wvc). There is no degredation when converting between lossless formats, but whenever encoding to a lossless format such as MP3, MPC, OGG, etc. information loss will occur. Transcoding from one lossy format to another is not recommended as each time more information is thrown out and sound quality will degenerate.
