Hi,
I'm looking for a cheap but reasonable DVD player, but I have to be able to modify it to read UK dvds as well as US. I've looked at the DVD Hacks list, but it's hard to tell without googling each one which are cheap.
Can anyone recommend a player to me?
cheers,
David

A region hack alone will NOT enable you to watch a PAL format DVD in America.
Hurdle one....region code.
Hurdle two....video format(PAL/NTSC). -
yep - looking for both features in a relatively cheap dvd player.
Any recommendations?!!!!!!!
cheers!
David
PS saw Philips USA DVP5140 Ultra Slim Dual Format Progressive Scan DVD Player - DVP5140/37 on buy.com for around $50 - any good? -
If you can't readily find a player - consider a Lite-On DVD recorder for about $70. Most models have both PAL and NTSC and have easy region hack. They have been as low as $50.

You can't go wrong with either the Philips DVP 5960 or the DVP 5140. Even the older model DVP 642 does a good job. All of them easy to make region free with a remote hack easily found on this site and all three will play PAL discs here in the USA with no problem. And all three of them can be found for very reasonable prices (cheap that is) for the features they have. Can't really go wrong!

My vote goes to the Philips DVP-5140
This model can be bought at WALMART for $49 and change.
Now this is a region one DVD player but there is a hack on this site to make it region free and it will do PAL DVD to NTSC conversion.
This DVD player also has very good support for MPEG-4 files (DivX/XviD).
This DVD player does have some "odd" points about it although based on your set-up it may or may not be a problem.
1.) It has composite video and component video output but no S-Video. If your TV has component then that is the best of the three but if you TV lacks component but has composite and S-Video then you are stuck using composite which is not as good as S-Video.
2.) Has digital audio output but only a COAX output ... no OPTICAL output. Also some say it doesn't support DTS but some say it does ... I have the Philips DVP-5140 but just a plain jane 2 Channel Stereo receiver so I cannot confirm nor deny DTS support.
Other than those two points this is a great DVD player for the money.
BTW here is a link to the region free hack ---> CLICK HERE
If you have a HDTV with a HDMI input ... and if you got about $230 to part with ... then may I suggest the Oppo Digital DV-981HD model. This model uses the Faroudja DCDi chipset (only active on the HDMI output) that will give you superior PAL DVD to NTSC conversion compared to anything else out there.

Good Luck !!!
