I will preface this by saying I am a complete novice at burning DVDs and am trying to paw my way through this process.

I am trying to burn some home movies onto a DVD for family using a CyberHome 1600 DVDR. My first attempt to record form my camcorder resulted in the disck not being able to play on any player other than the stand alone I used to burn it. Kept getting a No Disk message on any machine I put it into, including my computer.

I was able to open the disk up and use Nero to convert the video file to a Nero file. From there I re-encoded the video into a DVD using Nero. The new disk played perfectly on my computer and also on the DVDR stand alone I recorded from originally.

However I can't get the DVD to work on any other machine. The disk will actually play, but I can't get any sound. Is there something I am doing wrong?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I think you'll have to elaborate a bit more. What kind of camcorder? DV? In that case, look left under CONVERT for DV to DVD - 19 guides on last count on this topic alone.
What did you try in your first attempt at converting ??? to DVD (that then became input for Nero in your second attempt)
You say you record with camcorder, but then later it's from "DVDR standalone"?

Sorry for the confusion. Was trying to type quickly on my break.

I was trying to transfer home movies made from my Sony Camcorder to DVD format using my CyberHome 1600 DVDR.

The DVD that was created won't play on anything other than the CyberHome 1600.

I then took that disk and converted the video file, using Nero 7, into an mp4 format. With that mp4 file I am now turning it into a DVD (with menus and a title screen) also using Nero 7.

The final DVD that was created works on my computer adn the CyberHome 1600. However, when I play it on a different standalone I get the video, but no audio.

I hope that cleared things up. Sorry English isn't my first language

    Hi...

The DVD you made with nero is in mpeg4 (.mp4) (Divx or Xvid) and the sound can be in mp3 format...

These formats are not DVD standard , but many DVDplayers can play these type of files but not always
    without trouble....

The DVD standard is, video mpeg2 (.m2v) and the sound can be .mp2 (mpeg) .ac3 (Dolbydigital) or

    .dts..

So if you want your DVD to play on other DVDplayers i advice you to stick to the DVD standard..

How do I do this ???

Read the conversion guides in the forum and search for related topics...

(Its fun when you know how to do it)

    regards stars...

I usually finalize the disc if it is DVD-R

My dad has a Cyberhome...I don't like it....BUT did you finalize the disc? That is VERY important.

Waste of time and energy. You already have it in DVD format straight from the Cyberhome(once you get the playability/finalizing straightened out). There is no need to convert it to anything else...especially with Nero.

If you are just trying to make copies of the original DVD from the Cyberhome to send/give to friends and family...Nero is also not necessary or recommended(at least by me).

Thank you all for the responses.

Yes I have finalized the DVD and it won't play on anything but the CyberHome. And I have to agree I am not liking the CyberHome much either.

The reason I use Nero to recode is because I have had other home movies that won't play on certain DVD players before until I recoded the DVD using Nero. So far this is the only way I have been able to make DVDs.

Would it help if I recoded the movie into mpeg or avi?

And you are right this process is very time consuming. I am new to all this and only dabble with burning DVDs every once in a while. Still trying to learn.

Could it be a DVD+R vs. DVD-R issue? Some DVD players will play one but not the other. Media brands also may be an issue?
-- Geo :: I play ALL my * .AVI files on my Philips DVP642 !!!

If I recall correctly from my dad's Cybercrap machine....it had problems with anything recorded in 1 hour mode. You may want to try recording in 2 hour mode.

GeoFan may have a point however. If the DVDs....straight out of the Cyberhome....only play on the Cyberhome and your computer....it just might be a +R or -R issue or a combination of crappy DVDR's and a DVD Recorder that produces barely "industry standard" DVDs. I have a DVD here from my dad's Cyberhome recorder and I did have to spend more than average amount of time to get workable material from it. On the other hand I recorded 6 hours of television with it the last time I used my dad's Cyberhome and the disc plays normally. In the time between the two DVDs I just mentioned my dad did send it back for repairs.....and I think all they did was update the firmware in the Cyberhome. Updating firmware is something you could do yourself with a little bit of patience and a visit to the Cyberhome website.

If you are indeed able to "work with" the disc on your computer....then that is half of the battle right there.
You should have two folders on that DVDR....one that says DVDV_IRS and one that says VIDEO_TS....correct?(you can look at it on your computer).

    Just an update:

The issue probably isnt the + or -, I have used both and still have the same problems.

I will try all the suggestions posted so far (thank you again for all the feedback). I am stubborn so will continue to work with this until I can figure out what the problem is lol. I plan on doing what stars has recommended and converting it to standard DVD format. My biggest issue is that I will be sending these DVDs overseas to Vietnam and also Canada. Will there be a problem with these DVDs being able to play on their DVD players? I know there are some regional issues with commercial DVDs.

In the meantime I plan on buying a new DVR and hopefully won't run into the same CyberHome issues.

Try using your cyberhome DVD as input to TDA, and reauthor.
Region Code Protection is no issue with home made DVds, but TV systems may. On the good side, is that most PAL players/TV sets handle NTSC DVD fine.

One very important issue here "Which brand/media code" dvd's are you using? Do you have CDSPEED so you can run a disk quality test on one of your burned dvd's?

My dad uses Memorsux in his Cyberhome with no problems. With a Cyberhome recorder media quality is about 4th place in a list of "issues" that plague the machines.

My older Pioneer recorder defauts to recording in 'VR' mode. The resultant DVD plays in no other machine I have. Switching it to 'Video' mode in setup solved the problem (VOBs instead of VRO files).
