It won't play data DVDs at all - it says 'Cannot play disc' (but it plays shop-bought movies)
It will play JPG files on CDs but not MP3 files - and it should according to the manual. I have tried CD +RW and CD -RW with nothing but MP3 files on the disc, in folders and just in the root. It shows folders on the screen but no files. When I press Play or OK it always says 'No image data'.
I burned the discs with Nero v6 and CDBurnerXP 4, tried them both, and with the format set to ISO9660/Joliet and again ISO9660 level2.
What can I do? I haven't tried playing MP3s on it before and now I have loads I want to play!

It's difficult to say. There's no such thing as CD+RW, so your reference to CD-RW and CD+RW makes me wonder exactly what you are doing. You really need to get the info right if you want help. So go back and tell us exactly what brand and type of disc you are burning to.
My suggestion would be to take some type of RW disc and burn one MP3 file to it. Just one. Make sure that you finalize the disc. ISO9660 Joliet and level 2 should be OK, but I guess it's possible that they aren't. Try using just ISO9660 with no extensions. After burning, put it on a PC and be sure that you can play the file there. Then try to play the MP3 on your Sony player. Will it play? If no, you should either contact Sony or let us know the information about your MP3 file (CBR or VBR, bit rate, kHz).
It could be something about your MP3 files (maybe Sony only likes 44.1 kHz and you have 48 kHz). It could be that your discs aren't finalized. It could be your brand of media. It could be that you burned too many to the disc (that's why I suggested trying with only 1 file to see if you can get anything to work). Many DVD players have limits on how many MP3 files can be on a disc and how many can be in a folder. -
It may even by the naming of your files. Since there is no standard... it's hard to know if your player can take long names (some are so dumb they only like the 8.3 format), or can't take spaces, or can't take special characters.
I had to work through the same kind of lather-rinse-repeat with my phone.
Start with a file called SONG1.MP3
If that works, try "Song 1.mpg" then "This Is My Song 1.mp3" and then "This isn't my Song 2.mp3" -
Thanks for engaging. I have tried 2 CD RW disks from different manufacturers (mentioned CD+RW because I misread the label on one of the boxes) and checked on the PC after each burn that the files are on the disk and that they play. I used the burner software I listed in the post above and went right back to basics with ISO9660 level 1, one mp3 file on the disk, no folders, filename MYSONG.MP3 (in caps in case 'mp3' had to be capitalised but I also had 'mp3' lower case in different tests). I tested mp3s with different file systems and disks with only mp3 files, only jpg files and a mixture, with folders and without (files only on the root) Each time I tested a disk in the DVD player it did not show any mp3 files on the disk at all, and when I tried to play something - anything - it said 'No image data'. But if there were one or more jpg files on the disk it would list and display them (no matter what file system was used to burn them). Because there is no file list on screen of mp3 files with any file system (ISO/Joliet... etc - I tried them all) I don't think it is to do with the format or bit rate - just the file extension. How could I get some help from Sony about this? ie the player's behaviour contradicts the manual.
