I have several 8mm analogue tapes that were recorded in LP mode. The camcorder that these were created on has long since died and I was wondering if anyone on these forums can advise if the following is possible.

I can use another old 8mm camcorder that I have access to (which has no LP mode) to play the tapes but as you would expect the picture and audio is distorted. I can then take the output from this camcorder and convert it to a digital file and load onto my pc. Obviously though I still have a distorted picture and audio.

Is there any software available (at a reasonable cost) that can rectify this distortion by somehow cleaning up the video and audio on my digital file ???

If this is not possible, does anyone know if the commercial companies that offer 8mm to DVD conversion services can handle 8mm tapes recorded in LP mode ?

Thanks for taking a look at this.

    Rgds
    Nick.

I have a VCR that has only SP & EP but plays LP with no problem. Might work the same with the camcorder you mentioned.

  3. Although most 8mm camcorders don't record in LP mode nearly every one I have seen will playback in LP mode. It seems to be built into their spec. so the units auto detect and the LP and switch to it for playback.

Best thing is to get a hold of and 8mm camcorder and give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A Sony digital 8mm camera with time based correction would be
    the best bet, I think.
