I just bought a Gateway laptop with a PC card slot. There's a button that ejects the card. I found it had fallen out and into the laptop bag. I can't tell whether its broken or made to be removeable. I can push it in the slot for it and it seems to work fine. I don't have a card to test. It will stay in position unless I release it. Is that the way these buttons work? That is, they are detacable. If not, is there a simple fix like gluing it to the 'other' piece inside?

Its broken. You can quick fix it by using a glue, but that will not hold for a long time. The best way to do it is to buy PCMCIA Bracket, so you can replace it on the motherboard. That requires dissasembling entire laptop, to the point that you can remove the mobo. You should do that anyway before you buy a new bracket to make sure that you can replace it with the broken one. Most brackets are mounted with 4 screws, but some of them are mounted with 2 screws on 1 side and soldiered on the other side. If this is the case in your laptop, than you won't be able to replace it, unless you've got extreme soldiering skills. You can get a bracket like this on ebay for up to $10.00.

I just notice that it was a NEW laptop, so perhaps it is done this way so it can be removed, you would have to check on it.

As it turns out, HP makes a laptop with another device for ejecting the card that does not have this problem. I took it to Best Buy's Geek Squad, and their only suggestion was to send it to their repair place. No way. Not for something that simple. Besides, it does hold together, and a paperclip will work if I ever lose the piece.

future note*
do not use geek squad
my bud got juiced $250 for a job they were hired to do and were not able to fix, plus made the issues worse. i know that one example but most of what i hear from them is not very positive. -
Hey - I'm the founder of The Geek Squad. Saw this post. If any of you ever have a problem with any service with Geek Squad or Best Buy, feel free to pop me a message and I'll be glad to help.
On a broken eject switch - should be covered at no cost under warranty by us if still under warranty - but not a part that can usually be swapped in store. We just built a 165,000 sq. ft. facility at the end of a UPS runway to fix laptops faster. Repairs should be done within a week or so - if longer - let me know.
Also - We have a guarantee - if you are ever unhappy with our service - we guarantee it or your money back. don't hesitate to let me know directly.
Regards,
