anyone know of any? I've got a recording that sounds like the guy was under a couple of blankets!

You can use some VST plugins with the freeware audio editor Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/plugins

Remember that cutting the bass works as well as boosting the treble in many cases.
