I'm having trouble backing up my dvds that are scratched. Dvd fab platninum seems to be the only ripping program out there that can rip scratched dvds every time. However, sometimes when it rips it, When I fast forward through the whole movie, it freezes in the middle of the movie. I do this to test and make sure all chapter work well.

Does anybody have any suggestions for other rippers that can backup scratched dvds

And why does the dvd freeze sometimes when ripping from dvd plat?

    Thanks

    dannnyzz3,

If a scratch is bad enough, the drive can't read the affected sector(s) on the disk. Some ripping programs stop processing, and report the error on the assumption that the user can fix the problem. That approach fails in the case of a scratch that can't be repaired, so you can't get past the bad sector to rip the rest of the dvd.

Other programs (like DvdFab Decrypter) just skip over the unreadable sector(s) and insert dummy data to replace the skipped (missing) data, which allows the rip to finish, no matter what. That approach works well on scratched disks, but also skips sectors that are unreadable because of a problem that could be fixed (a dirty disk for example).

The dummy data that is inserted is just a placeholder, not the real data, so when the dvd is played back and it encounters the dummy data, it freezes, breaks up, etc.

If you want to try a different ripping program, RipIt4Me will also rip damaged disks, but no software is going to be able to accurately replace the part(s) that the drive can't read. They just allow you to salvage as much as possible.
