I just purchased Final Cut Pro I have a bunch of video that's in an AVI format and from what I understand it needs to be converted to Quicktime for Final Cut to work best.I just want to know what conversion program is the best bang for the $$ or free is even better.

    Thanks Chris

To get the best compatability for a MAC - probably Quicktime Pro. Keep is as DV and let Quicktime Pro put it in an MOV container. No quality should be lost this way.

His AVI may NOT be in DV-codec form, in which case it's going to need to be converted. Copies of FCP usually come with a copy of QT Pro, so that shouldn't be a problem. If he doesn't have it and doesn't want to fork over the extra ~29US, just use FCP itself to convert.
It may not "work" well with it, but it ought to be able to read it, assuming the AVI is using standard codecs (DV, DivX, Xvid, MPEG1/2/4, etc).
If it can't even READ it, then neither will QT. It'll have to be converted on a PC first (to HiQual QT .MOV) and then copied over to the Mac. This might be able to be done with QTPro on the PC, but if it didn't on the Mac, I doubt it would on the PC. You're probably going to need to look at the fourCC (Gspot, VideoIdentifier) and use the correct tool to convert that to a QT .MOV, or barring direct conversion, converting to a good common AVI (like noted above), and then with QTPro/FCP to a .MOV.

Maybe MPEG Streamclip ? Converts a lot of different formats.

Yeah, that should do the trick, but there are some formats it can't do (or can't do WELL), and for those, my steps should get 'em there.
