  1. Hi, how would I go about connecting a freeview box to this monitor?

    I have available a netgem freeview box so would prefer to use that but not necessary. I've tried a TV card but the signal strength from them always seems to suck and I don't really see the point in having my PC on just to watch TV..

    No idea about connection/adaptors so need some help… Not even sure if its possible..

  2. I believe they both have s-video ports so an s-video cable should work.

    A Scart to VGA cable might work. The gamma (brightness/contrast/saturation) may be off using this connection.

    Video Inputs

    Digital video standard Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
    Analog video signal RGB, S-Video, Component video, Composite video

    OK, interesting progressive computer monitor that also has composite, S-Video and YPbPr inputs. There is also a nice 30" model. PAL support isn't mentioned in this article, but if it is being sold in the UK it should support PAL. Ask don't assume.

    So what is it that you want to do with it? It will function as a computer monitor and should look good fed by an AVIVO (ATI 1xxx) or Pure Video (NVidia 6200 up) card.

    Is the problem SCART from the netgem freeview box? Adapters from SCART to S-Video or YPbPr probably exist.

    I'm not sure what you are asking.

    Scart to VGA sounds interesting but how will I get audio ? VGA only does video ?

  5. Maybe your box is different but if you look near the bottom of that web page:

    * S-Video or RGB + Composite via Scart
    There may also be s-video signals on the Scart connector.

    Audio will come from the stereo pin plug on the freeview box to, I'm guessing, RCA connectors on the monitor.

    <edit>

    Ah, no audio on the monitor. Use external speakers as suggested by edDV.

    </edit>

    Audio could come from simple amplified speakers or routed to your computer audio card line in or to a stereo receiver.

  7. Note the Scart spec supports s-video but it's not always implemented. If it's there, a simple Scart to s-video cable will work.

    Hmm, don't understand how I use s-video via scart.. I'm useless when it comes to cables and stuff.. Is to just an adaptor of some sort?

    Obviously sound will have to go though the computers speakers, my speakers have an optical connection so i'm hoping I can just connect that to the S/PDIF connection on the back of the freeview box.. Should that be a problem at all ?

    To get full 1980x1200 WUXGA resolution out of the computer to that display you will need a DVI (dual link) card and cable. Otherwise it will only go to 1600x1200 UXGA. If you plan to run at lower resolution, you might consider a cheaper monitor or a LCD-TV (larger pixels for larger screen).

    Computer monitors are for viewing from centimeters, LCD-TVs are for viewing from meters.

    If the speakers have a S/PDIF input and a Dolby Digital decoder then it should work.

    Well it just reads as digital optical connection so I'm not sure.. They look the same to me...

    So what do I need? coaxial ? My speakers have that too ..

  12. Note the s-video cable you linked to was an extension cable -- female/male connectors. You need a male/male cable.

    I don't know if your freeview box supports s-video on the scart connector. You often see complaints about black/white only with Scart to s-video adapters.

    Try what you have and see if it works. Coax is cheaper. Optical gives better electrical ground isolation (less potential for audio buzz).
